2014 marks the 'Year of Adventure' as Ireland celebrates fantastic adventure attractions and outdoor events. If you have a taste for a challenge why not register for Irelands biggest ever endurance event series, Endurance Challenge, which takes place throughout the country in August. There are four marathons in each province, in one or more of the four regional cycle tours, and a swim of the River Shannon to choose from. The various events cater for all levels of fitness, and aim to raise an incredible €500,000 for Breakthrough Cancer Research.

What better way to see the sights and scenery of our beautiful island than by hopping in the saddle and doing a 2 or 3 day cycling tour of one or more of our 4 provinces, it would certainly make for a memorable adventure holiday! The cycling routes are an opportunity for cyclists to get as close to a professional cycling experience as you can get as an amateur in Ireland. Each tour will feature overnight accommodation, meals, medical and mechanical support, motor cycle outriders, tour jerseys, and many other extras which really differentiate this event from every other sporting and fun cycle in Ireland currently. The cycling challenge will take the team along historical and scenic routes through every county in Ireland, covering in excess of 1780km. This is the equivalent of over half of the distance covered in the Tour De France. 4 cycle tours will take place in total and each tour has a maximum of 350 riders so spaces are limited and on a first come first served basis.

Embrace your sense of adventure by taking part in one of the 4 consecutive marathons which will take place in each province, in almost as many days this August! Each individual marathon is a distance of 42.195km or 26.385 miles, totalling 168.78km. Up to 1,000 runners are invited to join the team at each marathon. Runners will be able to participate at marathon, half marathon, 10k and 5k distances, and places will be allocated on a first come first serve basis.

Ulster: Starting and finishing in Monaghan, Ulster on 20th August. Connaught: Starting and finishing in Westport, Co. Mayo on 21st August. Leinster: Starting and finishing in Fingal Dublin on 23rd August. Munster: Starting and finishing in Midleton, Co. Cork on 24th August. Full Marathon 42 km €80 entrance fee; 1/2 Marathon 21km €50 entrance fee; 10km €25 entrance fee; 5km €20 entrance fee

A smaller group will have the opportunity to swim a part of the River Shannon, the longest river in Ireland and the UK.

About Breakthrough Cancer Research:

Breakthrough Cancer Research funds the development of new treatment options for poor prognosis and incurable cancers that do not currently respond to conventional therapies. They work closely with clinicians in practice all over Ireland to significantly impact on the number of people who can survive the disease. Research programmes funded by Breakthrough Cancer Research must focus on translating lab discoveries into new treatment opportunities and over the past 15 years they have delivered more than 5 new treatments to patients throughout Ireland.

Monies raised through Breakthrough Cancer Research are used to support focused research programmes, directly fund scientists and purchase laboratory consumables. By supporting them, you can ensure that all cancer patients throughout Ireland have the opportunity to access the most up to date and effective treatment for their disease. There is hope and that hope is in research.

Endurance Challenge was started by James Colbert and Sean Buckley, who plan to undertake a record feat by completing the entire 2068km of the Challenge, cycling through every county in Ireland, swimming 120km of the River Shannon and running in four consecutive marathons, in just 22 days. The event is in memory of Sean's father, John Buckley, who passed away from cancer.

Ciara Conway - Response On 24/7 Cardiology For Waterford University Hospital

"We're not here to beg - this was a commitment given for the people of the South East."

Ciara Conway Condemns 'disgraceful' Response On 24/7 Cardiology For Waterford University Hospital

Labour TD for Waterford Ciara Conway is strongly condemning a lack of action and slow pace in establishing a 24 hour Cardiology Service in Waterford University Hospital.

"This is an issue of life of death- it's as stark as that," claimed the Vice Chair of the Health Committee.

Ciara Conway continued "I've been demanding answers from the Health Minister on this particular issue on a regular basis, and just this week received the most up to date position from the Hospital Manager. Frankly speaking, I'm disgusted at what was contained in the response."

"To put it simply, this matter isn't being moved on quickly enough. I asked for a clear timeline and instead I'm told that, by September, there should be three Cardiologists in place, which is good news, as one of those is a new role – but more than this is needed."

"According the HSE there's to be a 4th Consultant Interventionist Cardiologist in place by 2015 – but, and I quote: "In order to provide 24/7 cover over the coming 2/3 years University Hospital Waterford will require a 2nd Catheterisation Laboratory and 6 Interventional Cardiology Consultant posts."

The Deputy went on "This will come down to funding of course, but my point is that we – that is to say, the people of Waterford and the South East –were promised this - so that money simply HAS to found.

"We're not here to beg, this was a commitment given to the people of Waterford and the South East. In fact, Professor Higgins himself, the author of the controversial report on reorganising hospital groupings said as much recently during our meeting with the Health Minister at the renaming of the hospital.

It's not a matter of pleading for the money- this is an urgent healthcare issue for 500,000 people across the region, and we shouldn't as politicians have to plead to get the funding, The money needs to be ring-fenced and delivered. As Vice Chair of the Health Committee this will be my priority as the estimates are scrutinised."

Sun Life Financial has supported Waterford's Viking Marathon as sponsors since the first year of the event in 2012. This year they are going the extra mile, as well as continuing with their corporate sponsorship, they have also agreed to sponsor this year's goody bag snack. In the past the WVM goody bag contained a chocolate snack however this year a healthier option will replace it.

Sun Life Ireland General Manager Karen Burns says "We are delighted to sponsor the healthy snack in this year's WVM goodie bags. In recent years Sun Life has placed a large emphasis on Wellness and exercise and with this in mind we decided replacing the chocolate snack with a bag of popcorn would be a more nutritional, wholegrain and low calorie option.”

Sun Life Financial is based in Waterford's Industrial Estate. Employing just under 350 people, the Waterford office provides Software Development, Business Administration and Technical Helpdesk services to their US and Canadian divisions.

Volunteers urgently required for Waterford's Viking Marathon.

With registrations nearing the 2000 mark organisers urgently appeal for the public's assistance. This year's marathon numbers have exceeded last years and volunteers are vital to the success of same.

According to chairman of WVM "Volunteers not only assist us in providing a safe and secure event they also encourage the runners along the route and also create a great atmosphere.”

On Saturday 28th June, the route will be overseen by the Gardaí and over 200 stewards are required on the day. Fifteen bands and Musicians will entertain along the route to help encourage and distract runners where they most require it.

The race will conclude in the RSC where a Family Friendly Event is planned with some vendors, live music and some fun kid's entertainment.

The awards are designed to recognise the achievement of individual businesses and business leaders.

The awards will be open for nominations from the 1st September until November 28, 2014, where after a shortlist of finalists will be announced and an award final will be held in February 2015 to announce the award winners under each category.

The ten categories comprise of Arts & Culture, Tourism & Hospitality, Services, Food and Agri Business, Retail, Best Small Business, New Business, Innovation and Technology, Manufacturing and Industry, Community and Social Enterprise and an overall Business of the Year award which will be sponsored by Waterford City and County Council.

President Higgins to open 'WiKID'

Fun New Children's Festival To Celebrate Waterford1100 Over 20,000 people are expected to visit Waterford city this weekend to enjoy the WiKID festival – including one very special VIP guest.

President Michael D. Higgins will officially open the festival on Friday at 4:00 p.m. at a special ceremony at New Street Gardens. WAMA will be presenting a set of Irish traditional music on the lead up to the Presidents arrival on stage, followed by a short excerpt from 'Poetry in Motion' - a dance show collaboration between poet Mark Roper and three Waterford dance troupes; Traces Dance Ensemble, WAMA, and WYD Moves Youth Dance. The President has a love of Irish music and poetry so this will be a very fitting opening piece!

WiKID's official opening on Friday will be followed by two fun-filled days of interactive family and children events – many of which are free – to mark the city's 1100th birthday whilst showcasing Waterford's rich heritage and culture. The festival events have been divided into a series of fun programme strands children will relate to: Totally WiKID Stuff, Nature Stuff, Cool Stuff; Fun Stuff and WiKID Arty Stuff.

Hoards of Vikings will descend on the grounds of the Court House which is being transformed in to a large scale Viking Village, complete with Viking School! Presented by Deise Medieval, the Viking Village will recreate Viking life and children will have the opportunity to take part in Viking Crafts, including designing and painting their own wooden shields.

Bookings for WiKID events have been very strong, according to organisers, with a huge response, in particular, to the unique Sleepover at the Medieval Museum event this Saturday from 7pm to 7am.

"There's been a great response to WiKID. Many of the events are almost sold out and any remaining tickets are selling fast. There are lots of enquiries about The Big Dig, Viking School and Sleepover at the Museum as well as theatrical events such as Tumble Circus at the Theatre Royal. Places for the various workshops are almost filled. People love the varied and fun programme and it's a great way for families to get involved with the Waterford1100 birthday celebrations – particularly as many of the events are free. Where bookings are necessary, I would advise anyone considering attending events to ensure they book in advance to avoid disappointment.” Said Lynn Cahill, Waterford City and County Council.

RTE's Nationwide crew will be in various city locations over the weekend capturing some of the festival highlights. A full Nationwide programme, dedicated to Waterford 1100 and WiKID, will be broadcast next Monday (23rd June) at 7pm on RTE1. WLR's DeiseAM will broadcast its Friday programme live from the Waterford Treasures Museum with much of the programme content centred around WiKID and the weekend's activities.

How safe is your workstation?

I am the manager of a small office with 6 employees. Someone mentioned to me recently that the computer workstations needed to be assessed under health and safety legislation. Can you please tell me if this is true, and also, if it is necessary, how can we do this without incurring excessive cost? Joanna.

Dear Joanna,

Thank you for your email. In short, yes, employers must carry out an assessment of employee workstations where the employee uses a computer workstation daily and continuously for at least 1 hour per day. The specific legislation relating to this assessment – known as VDU or Visual Display Unit assessment is the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work, (General Application) Regulations 2007, Chapter 5 of Part 2.

The aim of the assessment is to identify any issues that might cause harm either because of the way the workstation is set up or because of the immediate environmental conditions such as noise and temperature. During the assessment, consideration needs to be given to the potential for work to cause or contribute to musculoskeletal disorders, or harm to eyesight or mental stress. Very importantly, the assessment must be carried out by someone who has the appropriate training, experience and knowledge.

In relation to cost, you can either have one of the employees trained as a VDU assessor (this typically is a 1 day training course and there are a number of local service providers – perhaps you could contact your local Skillnet for information on subsidised courses), or you can engage a consultant to carry out the assessments for you – typically costs are based on the number of individual assessments being carried out, and again there are a number of consultants who carry out this work locally. When choosing a consultant, it is always worth enquiring if they are members of a recognised professional body such as IOSH (Institute of Occupational Safety and Health).

Finally, research suggests that 1 in 3 adults will suffer from a musculoskeletal disorder – reducing the risk by investing in workstation assessments would be a very wise investment!

I hope this helps.

Be one of the 2,200 students who will start the next chapter of their lives in WIT

The Change of Mind deadline is just around the corner and the choice students make on Tuesday 1 July represents one of the most important decisions they will ever make. Choosing the right course and the right college is the first step in choosing the right career.

WIT is one of the largest third-level education institutions in Ireland and more than 2,200 first year students will walk through its doors this September. The first year intake will start on 70 courses as diverse as Architecture, Psychology, Law, Forestry, Physics for Modern Technology, Business with Chinese and much more and many of them will stay with us right through to postgraduate level and beyond.

At WIT, student welfare is paramount. It's important students are happy and interested in their chosen course of study. To help with this important decision, the Institute are holding a drop-in clinic from Wednesday 25 to Friday 27 June. Applicants and parents are invited to drop in to talk through options with our Schools' Liaison team, tour the campus, talk to current students and generally get a sense of student life at WIT.

Over 7,000 patients outsourced from University Hospital Waterford last year

'Local services being hacked away' - John Halligan TD

Waterford's Independent TD Deputy John Halligan has accused the HSE of starving University Hospital Waterford of funding whilst outsourcing over 7,000 patients to private hospitals last year to meet Government waiting list targets, many at a cost of up to €150 per consultation.

Deputy Halligan was reacting to his discovery that 6,456 patients on waiting lists for outpatient treatment at UHW were referred to private facilities for consultations last year, whilst a further 666 patients were referred for in-patient/day case procedures.

The patients were treated at the Whitfield Clinic in Waterford; Aut Even Hospital, Kilkenny; Mater Private Hospital, Cork; Bon Secours Hospital, Cork and the Eye and Ear Hospital in Dublin.

“A total of 2,896 patients from Waterford have already been seen at these private hospitals and, of these, 956 require follow-up care that must now be facilitated at UHW. The HSE says a further 3,560 Waterford patients will be seen at private hospitals by the end of this month, at which point many of them will undoubtedly also be referred back to await the necessary treatment or follow-up at UHW. They've moved from one waiting list to another, at a huge cost to the taxpayer, so that Government targets for waiting lists can be met. Yet they're still a long way from receiving the treatment they need. This is not a sustainable solution to waiting lists.”

Deputy Halligan demanded to know the cost per private consultation incurred by the HSE. “I find it highly suspect that Minister Reilly will not clarify the cost per outsourced work, nor the total pay-out to private hospitals for these Waterford patients. Consultant eye surgeon Mr Paddy Condon has already claimed that, in some cases, HSE-employed consultants were being paid top-ups of €500 to €700 for cataract operations on public waiting list patients and I suspect this is just the tip of the iceberg.

“Overall, referrals from UHW represented over one third of all outsourcing in the country to private hospitals last year. Yet cuts at our public hospital are hitting deeply, the severely reduced workforce is at breaking point and an increasing number of services are being withdrawn, which will only serve to lengthen waiting lists. Just last week, GPs in Waterford were advised that there is now no dermatology service in Waterford and only emergency cases will be accepted in Cork. Operating theatres are closed because of cuts, there is a shortage of consultants across a range of disciplines, a shortage of radiographers and many other professions...services are being hacked away in Waterford by stealth and the long-term repercussions are going to be catastrophic”, Deputy Halligan concluded.

Conway Wants Maximum Use Of Nama Units For Social Housing

0
0

Ciara Conway is urging Waterford City & County Council to continue in its efforts to provide social housing from units sourced by NAMA in Waterford.

“NAMA has identified 72 units in Waterford as being suitable for social housing. Meanwhile, the council has confirmed that 46 of those are available locally and are suitable for that purpose. But so far we have yet to see any NAMA-sourced units being actually delivered for social housing purposes in Waterford, and that must change.

“There are valid reasons why a local authority may not deem some units as suitable.

This includes issues such as location, social housing demand in an area and tenure mix. However, I want to see the maximum possible use of NAMA units. !

“I will be contacting the council this week to urge them to continue to re-examine the potential of units not previously taken up. We need to explore more innovative approaches that could unlock the potential of some of these developments. In the meantime, I am very supportive of moves by my colleague, Housing Minister Jan O'Sullivan, in this regard.”

Waterford pays tribute to Tawdy

A friend of Tawdy Morrisseys says he was always in good form which endeared him to Waterford people. The local character who lived on the Tramore Road just by the Halfway House has died. Tawdy, who was 58, was known and loved by many in Waterford and he often waved flags at passing motorists for major sporting events. In recent years he was given his own bench by Waterford City Council.

Tawdy was found dead in his hut this by a neighbour. Sam Cleere is a former worker at the Men's Hostel in Waterford and he now runs a charity called 'Breadline' in the City. Speaking to WLRFM News he said Tawdy had a positive effect on people, and brought out the best in people around Waterford who regularly offered to help him any way they could.

FF's Quinlan finds leak in Irish Water's finances for Waterford

0
0

Last week Waterford's new city and county council published its long term strategic projects plan. A large capital spending programme on infrastructural and regeneration across the city and county that is seen as badly needed over the coming years. A staggering 25 million is deemed necessary to upgrade the county's water and sewerage systems.

Unfortunately unlike previous years where the local authority received the funding from the government to cover these costs, a total of zero euro's has been allocated to the council. The governments new body Irish Water has been tasked with paying for this project. 'Central funds meant corporation taxes, capital gains taxes etc were all used to pay for these projects in the past. As we all know Irish Water's sole means of raising this money is through bills in the letterbox drawing money out of Waterford peoples pay packets' said Cllr Quinlan

Confusion still surrounds how Irish Water will raise its money, whether as a charge equal across the board or if people in some county's will have to pay more if their county's are seen to be using more than the average. This policy is extremely popular amongst government backbenchers in the Dublin area as with a greater population in a smaller area, this system would reduce their bills while causing those in Waterford to soar.

'Waterford needs these upgrades, Tramore and Butlerstown only recently had their systems crash. We had a much more equal basis of paying for them when the whole tax system was being used. Now these projects will have to be paid for from those paying PAYE, PRSI and even those unemployed while much of the taxes collected from high finance and top end earners remains immune' said Cllr Quinlan.

It is hoped Irish Water and the government will agree to amend the way they will raise this money in the near future before large bills such as these fall due on the public.

Following the success of Des Whelan's ‘Top Ten Tips on Branding' the Local Enterprise Office is looking forward to welcoming Louise Grubb to give her ‘Top Ten Tips on Business Expansion' this Thursday July 3rd.

These sequence of events called ‘Top Ten lunches' are a series of networking lunches on the theme of ‘my top ten business tips' delivered by successful local business people and occurring once per month. Each lunch will outline the speakers' views on a specific topic such as branding, export, retail and selling on line.

These lunches take place in the Bistro in the Tower Hotel from 12.30pm to 2pm. This series is also an appropriate way to introduce the new Local Enterprise Office in Waterford to local business people.

There is a considerable pool of business talent and experience in Waterford and the L.E.O. hopes to harness this expertise to inspire Waterford's new and existing business people.

Louise Grubb is the CEO and Founder of Q1 Scientific which was launched in 2013 to provide a world-class Environmentally Controlled storage facility servicing the Pharmaceutical and Life Sciences industries. Ciarán Cullen of the Local Enterprise Office in Waterford is particularly looking forward to hear Louise, "We worked with Louise a number of years ago when Nutri-science was growing and years later we also helped with the launch of Q1 Scientific. Louise is an excellent speaker and when it comes to start up businesses is always very generous with her time."

The lunches are taking a break in August but return with Ronan Mulligan's 'Top Ten Tips on technology in retail' on September 18th. Future speakers also include John Noonan of Flahavan's and Grainne Walsh of Metalman Brewing.

The cost of these events is just €8.50, this is for the cost of the lunch alone. Booking is essential. For more information or to register your interest please contact your Local Enterprise Office in Waterford on 051-849905 or email info@leo.waterfordcouncil.ie .
